Skunk in My Crawl Space
Do you ever hear strange noises coming from under your bed or above your ceiling when you should be fast asleep? This happened to me one night when a skunk got into a fight with another animal under my house. Within seconds a terrible vapor cloud came up through my subfloor and wafted over the oak floor boards. The smell was intolerable and it was 3am! I had visions of a large, truck tire burning under my bed. The smell was that bad; it was chemical warfare of the worst kind. With a closet full of smelly clothes, going to work each day that week was a real challenge!
Here are the main culprits in Los Altos, CA and they are stronger than you think.
Pathway into your home
Attics and crawl spaces are pathways to your home infrastructure or directly into your home’s interior. Attic and crawl space access doors and ventilation screens need to be maintained or your home is at risk of costly repairs, or at the very least, poor air quality. Animals can chew home insulation and electrical wiring, gnaw on wood causing structural damage, and even find ways to enter your home’s walls and bathtub enclosures. Animals can leave behind their waste or even die in your walls causing odors that take weeks to go away.
Periodic Inspections
I really recommend doing periodic inspections on all your attic and crawlspace entry points and vent screens. Also make sure contractors put your access doors back in place after doing work at your home. Leaving a crawlspace or attic access panel off or unsecured for a few nights virtually guarantees you will have an unwanted visitor. Ask me how I know!

Repair of Access Hatches and Vent Screens
Attic and crawl space access hatches usually go un-noticed until there is a wildlife issue. Some hatches don’t fit well, can’t be secured, or have become weathered from direct exposure to the elements or contact with the ground. The access hatch must be in good shape and have a way of being securely closed and latched. These animals are strong and determined.

All ventilation points must be covered with non-corroding wire mesh. Vents sizes are typically 8”x16” on foundations and 4”x16” or 8”x16” on eves. Quarter-inch screen mesh used to be common in California but 1/8” (3mm) is better for insects. In high-fire-risk areas, 1/16” mesh is preferred for exclusion of firebrands or small embers. However, the 1/16” mesh size may reduce your airflow below required levels.
